"And the dawns are quiet here ...": what happened to the prototypes of the story

"And the dawns here are quiet", 1972

In short, all of them, except the commander, as in the story (and in the eponymous film by Stanislav Rostotsky), died. Only the chief military of the prototypes of the heroines was not a foreman at all. And fighters who fell in an unequal battle turned out to be representatives of the opposite sex.

Everything is wrong, not with those and not there

Boris Vasiliev, inspired by the experience of his fellow front-line writers, wanted, as he himself admitted in an interview, to write something of his own. The work, which would have been reflected exactly his war, "Forest". War without rears and advanced, artillery and air support. The war, where one-on-one with the enemy, in the forest, and a squad (group, division) must independently decide how to act in a fight with the enemy, build a strategy and tactics, not hoping for help from the outside.

The writer recalledthat he had long been carrying out the “foggy” (his formulation) plan of the future work, until he read a small note in the Izvestia newspaper about the defense of the junction railway station in the direction of Petrozavodsk-Murmansk. Petrozavodsk itself was occupied by Finnish units. The note said that German sabotage groups sought to blow up the rocade used by Soviet troops to transport personnel, equipment and ammunition. Our special forces destroyed most of the saboteurs, but one detachment still managed to infiltrate. By coincidence, it happened in the defense of the sergeant himself.

The forces were definitely unequal, this story was somewhat similar to the plot of Bondarchuk's "9 Company", only reality turned out to be harder - ours had seven wounded soldiers, including a sergeant, and only one machine gun. The sergeant was the only one left alive; he, who was fired from a machine gun, was just riddled with bullets and shrapnel. But until the reinforcements came, a small group of Soviet Fritz soldiers did not let them to the railway canvas.

A note in Izvestia, judging by the interview with Boris Vasilyev, came out after the war.It briefly reported that the sergeant, whose name the writer did not remember, survived and was even awarded the medal "For Military Merit." By the way, it was very honorable in the soldiers' environment - for the "be ze" in that war "for no reason" was not awarded.

And here the women's unit

“Here is the plot!” Thought the future author of the wonderful story Boris Vasiliev, and began working with the theme. One page is written, two, three, seven - no story goes. And everything is good, but something is not good - a private story, no novelty. An essay would have gone, but for a piece of art there is not enough of something important that could play on the piercing images of the characters in the story.

And Boris Vasilyev invented that the young women who are fighting under the guidance of an experienced, fired sergeant should become the heroines of his works. Then writing the text went like clockwork.

In fact, the story that formed the basis of the story and film never happened in life. There were many others with the participation of women at the front, no less brutal and harsh — hundreds of thousands of women in one capacity or another fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, and it was definitely more difficult for them than for men.And no one, with rare exceptions, did not describe their fate.

Were there saboteurs in those places?

There were, and they behaved quite actively. The film by S. Rostotsky mentions that the German commando group attempted to blow up the flood gates of the White Sea-Baltic Canal in order to stop the navigability of this strategically important waterway. Indeed, right from the first day of the war, the transfer of subversive Finnish (non-German!) Groups to the territory of the USSR began from the territory of Finland.

True, they did not feel as free as shown in the film by Stanislav Rostotsky, the dawns for the Finns there were not at all quiet: the saboteurs in the very first stages of landing were spotted by the NKVD special forces, their rubber boats, hidden ammunition and food. For scout hunted and very effective.

Such attacks from the Finnish side were numerous, but they always met with organized resistance from the Red Army. The Finns did not succeed in carrying out substantial sabotage on our territory.
