Assembling Nyoka Armored Vehicles in Uganda

As the Ugandan media reported, on August 8, 2018, in the presence of Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the first Nyoka class 4x4 armored vehicles of the MRAP were displayed in Uganda at an enterprise in the Magamaga Barracks of the Uganda People’s Defense Force in Mayuga near the capital Kampala. The assembly is organized in partnership with the company Impala Services and Logistics Limited, which is the Ugandan branch of the South African company Twiga Services and Logistics (Pty) Limited (the latter is the successor of the developer of the Nyoka armored vehicles of the South African company Industrial and Automotive Design SA - IAD).

Twiga Services and Logistics through Impala Services and Logistics has been cooperating with the Uganda Armed Forces since 2011. For the first time, plans for organizing the assembly of Nyoka armored vehicles in Uganda were announced in 2014. In 2011-2014, Twiga delivered 22 Nyoka vehicles to the People’s Defense Forces of Uganda. Apparently, Uganda has become the starting customer of these machines.
Speaking on August 8, while visiting the assembly plant, President Museveni declaredthat it is planned to organize the production of armor steel for the production of Nyoka armored vehicles at the metallurgical plant in Tororo in Uganda (armored steel from Sweden is now used - apparently by SSAB). It was also announced plans to organize the construction in partnership with Impala Services and Logistics of small boats for the People’s Defense Forces of Uganda (previously Twiga had already supplied several boats and motorboats to Uganda).
The Nyoka, developed in the 2000s by IAD from Pretoria, is one of the modified versions of the famous South African armored vehicles Mamba. It is reported that the car has a capacity of 11 people (including two crew members). The ballistic protection of the hull corresponds to the level of the NATO standard STANAG 4569 Level 1, and anti-mine protection - to the level of STANAG 4569 Level 2b (undermining 7 kg of TNT under the bottom).
IAD also developed together with a group of Saudi Groups from Saudi Arabia and in 2012 introduced a heavier and protected armored vehicle Nyoka Mk 2 (Masmak) with 4x4 wheel arrangement, having a mass of up to 15 tons. Under the name Masmak, it was planned to be produced in Saudi Arabia, but there is no information on the production there. Later the rights to the Nyoka Mk 2 (Masmak) were acquired by the South African Paramount Group, which is marketing this machine called Mbombe 4.
